Surrounded by family members, teammates, coaches, staff, and supporters, Minel Ashley Velasquez and Christian Torres were recognized during a special signing ceremony held at Juarez-Lincoln High School. The event celebrated not only their athletic accomplishments on the soccer field, but also the dedication, perseverance, and leadership that have defined their high school journeys.

Both athletes have played integral roles within the Juarez-Lincoln High School soccer program, earning the respect of teammates and coaches through their work ethic, passion for the game, and commitment to excellence both academically and athletically.

Torres, a standout player who has competed at the varsity level since his freshman year, shared his excitement about taking the next step in his soccer career.

“I’m incredibly excited and grateful for this opportunity to continue playing the sport I love at Jarvis Christian University,” said Torres. “I especially want to thank my parents for all of their sacrifices and support throughout this journey. They have been there for me every step of the way.”

Juarez-Lincoln High School Boys Soccer Head Coach Victor Ramos praised Torres for his impact on the program and expressed confidence in his future success at the collegiate level.

“Christian is one of the top players not only at Juarez-Lincoln High School, but across the district,” said Ramos. “Watching him earn the opportunity to compete at the collegiate level is incredibly rewarding. His talent, leadership, and determination have made a tremendous impact on our program, and I know he is going to accomplish great things at Jarvis Christian University.”

Velasquez, a team captain and standout competitor, reflected on the journey that led her to Jarvis Christian University after being noticed by scouts during a tournament competition.

“When Jarvis Christian University reached out to me, it was an amazing feeling,” said Velasquez. “I’m so excited for this next chapter and the opportunity to continue competing alongside athletes who share the same passion for the game. I’m ready to give it my all.”

Velasquez also expressed gratitude for the unwavering support she received throughout her athletic career.

“My parents, teammates, and coaches have all played such an important role in helping me grow as a player and as a person,” she said. “Every practice, every game, and every challenge helped prepare me for this moment.”

Juarez-Lincoln High School First Assistant Girls Soccer Coach Monica Butler highlighted Velasquez’s growth and confidence throughout her four years in the program.

“Minel’s talent and determination truly stood out this season and caught the attention of Jarvis Christian University,” said Butler. “Her speed, confidence, and understanding of the game make her an incredible athlete. It has been rewarding to watch her grow from a freshman still discovering her potential into a confident leader who fully understands her abilities and plays with purpose every time she steps onto the field.”

The signings reflect La Joya ISD’s continued commitment to developing student-athletes prepared for success in college, career, and life, while showcasing the strength and excellence of Juarez-Lincoln High School’s athletic programs.
